The drop in temperature this time of year always seems to bring with it a new round of cold and
flu viruses as we all huddle together inside our homes once again. Our mobile home
communities are in parts of the country where winter seems to last a bit longer than a mere
three months, so we can expect to prepare for a few illnesses each year!
While over-the-counter medications may provide some relief, it’s hard to beat natural remedies
to help alleviate your painful or frustrating symptoms. Here are just a few ways you can shorten
your illness and relieve the pain!
Hydration is key. Your body craves liquid when you have a cold or the flu. Keep drinking plenty
of water, warm herbal teas, clear broths, or water with lemon and lemon to soothe a sore throat
or relieve congestion.
Eat immune-boosting foods. Although comfort foods like chicken noodle soup are great for
your morale when you’re sick, there are plenty of all-natural foods you can add to your diet that
will boost your immune system by providing vitamins and antioxidants. Citrus fruits, berries,
garlic, ginger, and leafy greens are excellent choices.
Honey and lemon elixir. We mentioned it above, but it deserves its own category: the classic
remedy of a combination of honey and lemon is a soothing elixir that can provide relief for a
sore throat and cough. Simply mix a tablespoon of honey with warm water, then add a squeeze
of fresh lemon juice. The antibacterial properties of honey combine with the vitamin C in lemon
to create a potent natural remedy.
Herbal teas for comfort. Not only are they soothing, warm, and hydrating, several herbal teas
also have therapeutic properties that can ease cold and flu symptoms. Chamomile tea, for
example, can help with sleep and relaxation, while peppermint tea can relieve congestion.
Echinacea and elderberry teas are known for their immune-boosting benefits.
Rest. Your body needs rest to heal – lots of it. When you get tired, listen to your body and
sleep, allowing your body the time it needs to heal. Sleep is essential for a robust immune
system and your overall well-being.
Everyone has an over-the-counter medicine that helps get them through the day when a cold or
flu finally hits. But what really leads to a full recovery is the immune-boosting remedies provided
by nature. We can all get through this season together and make it to a healthy Spring!
